Finally closing this super fun hippopotamus project!
Re-started from an old model I did while I was at school. The anatomy and basic shapes were really off so I had to re-sculpt everything with, I hope, a better understanding of forms and anatomy.
Skin detailing was a mix of handsculpting, custom alphas projection in zbrush, Flipped normal skinkit and texturing xyz textures proj I did in Mari.
I also started texturing and lookdev on day one so that I could update everything and choose what I would work on based on my renders.
Texturing was fully done in Mari NC so I had a limit of 6 udims.
As usual I used Zak Boxall's (https://www.artstation.com/zakboxall) gizmo to paint dirt and dust mask and his amazing cavity map extractor in Designer, always super useful!
Lookdev turns were done using https://www.artstation.com/blayapapaya lookdev scene as a base.
I sure want to continue working on this one as a lot of things need refining, and I would love to see this hippo in movement and in an environment but for now, I just tried to have fun with some quick lighting/renders/comp in nuke and photoshop!
